WHO DO?

Today notion SAND ART includes: cartoons (animated films), where different free-flowing materials are used, and masters’ live performance to audience…
These ways are close, they have many in common. Only in animation aim is a concrete film made by creative teamwork, and in a live performance it’s a process of work.
There are much more animators using sand for their works than masters of live performance…
(much more sounds strange if there are only 15-20 artists).

Why are we so few? was my first question after sand started talking to me. It was clear later but too late.
Skill to draw doesn’t guarantee a performer to audience needed speed and strength of mind…
Strong nerves and artistry don’t add producer’s gift…
And ability to form up an interesting plot gives you nothing without real relations to this strange and really live material…

Meet them!
Here they are – fighters of international sand front:

Ferenc Cako

– a Hungarian artist, producer of animated films.
Here “Attention!” to everyone, and there are reasons to it! He’s a leader and coryphaeus. 30 years he makes cartoons (including sand films). Oscar nominant, winner of Cannes festival, festival in San-Francisco and many others. And though using of sand in animation is not his invention, he is a founder of live performances to audience.

Now he appears on television, in different film- and animation festivals (often he himself is in jury), on event- enterprises…
Several times he pleased us: he was in Moscow, in Rostov-on-Don. A birthday of shopping center supported,
opening of a large auto-center beautified… All in all the man works, and reputation gained by right. The most famous composition of Cako is “Evolution” (in many live performances he presents it), but some of his works in animation make stronger impression on me.

Ilana Yahav

- An Israeli artist. Probably the most energetic representative of Sand Art in commercial usage of it.
Works all over the world, makes advertisements, music videos, appears at performances, corporatives (attended Russia).
Opened her studio in the native land.
To my mind, her works are distinguished not so much by high level of creation, as by good hands’ position: her movements are clear,
sure, beautiful…
With such activity and productivity it’s not surprising.. From time to time Ilana makes really talented works. For example, her video to Dato (Georgian singer)’s song “Mahingi Var” was a laureate of Moscow international advertising festival in 2005, was presented in “Cannes Lions” and other festivals. By the way exactly this clip was my first acquaintance with the sand animation technique.
Thanks, Ilana!

Evgeni Sverdlov

Our excurcion to Israel is continuing!
Though Evgeni was born, grew up, got education in Leningrad, he fulfilled himself in Israel,
where he came in early 90-s. He achieved success in designing of different shows.
All in all, Sverdlov is much more a classic artist than a sandartist. Draws and represents pictures, illustrates books.
His contribution to “great sand deed” he brought by a series of animation clips to songs to Bialik’s poems (DVD is selling with the book now).
What about live performances – there are.
He appears in different shows and presentations (mostly because he decorates them…). Works quickly, surely, that is an undoubted plus to the presentation to audience. It seems that he doesn’t sweats because of the quality of images, probably using the ancient right of artist “I see it such way”, and that is really his right.

Also there is American

Joe Castillio

His niche is very special, it will last him and his grandchildren if they draw with sand. It is Church (surprised?). Joe is a pastor. Moving from parish to parish he creates by sand for the glory of God proper plots and images… And he makes it not bad!
Though sometimes it arises suspicion that that’s all.
His attempts to realize other themes differ by quality of fulfillment, and that’s strange..
But he is undoubtedly talented and surely on his place.

I decided to mention Frenchman David Myriam only because of his activity: animation, live performances, actions, master-classes…
In spite of gloom and disruptiveness of his animation works, there is creation and artistry.
But live performances evidently don’t possess it: he draws boring, long, not bravely,
and using of different tools:
brushes, sticks, shovels aggravates the impression…
Believe that his capacity for work will sooner or later turn quantity into quality…

Besides about ANIMATION!

It’s all right with the sand animation abroad; it’s a real creation of talented foreign people…
This is worth seeing

Caroline Leaf.
Caroline created sand cartoons as early as 70-s!
Marissa Delbressine..About sand!
Veronika Bromova, Maria Foldesova
Mark Fuell
Luciano Vecchio
Sigrid Astrup
Ben Zelkowicz
DOBphoto Not sand but SALT. And there are reasons!.
Cesar Diaz
Not bad animator,
though it’s the case you can’t get “Why sand?”
Kim HaJoon, Korean super-animators!!! You should pay attention to Korea, by the way. Guys there are very talented and work seriously. By the way in Korea the festival “Sand animation” is hold regularly.

That’s proper all world sand company.

Of course there are followers…
From time to time all over the world as a result of meeting this art there appear and disappear people who draw with sand. They are students (more often girls) of art institutions searching wages or new creative impressions, they are experienced artists in the effort to express themselves in original technique and many others. As a rule, the level of skill and degree of artistry let me with a clear conscience not to tell about them individually.
But I say sincere Thanks! to every of them for their participation in “the way of sand” to people.

Of course there are really outstanding “followers”!:

Ŕ ×ŇÎ Ó ÍŔŃ ? Ńďđîńčňĺ Âű ěĺí˙…

Đîńńčč SAND ART, â âčäĺ ćčâűő âűńňóďëĺíčé, ďî˙âčëń˙ ńîâńĺě íĺäŕâíî.

AND WHAT ABOUT US? You will ask me…

In Russia SAND ART as live performances appeared not long ago.

Episodically attempts were registered since 2006. The level of works’ artistry and so loved by me relations with material don’t let to say much (nothing about).
In that very 2006 in Novosibirsk there was an attempt to hold a competition of “live” sand animation as a part of yearly beach festival, and something succeeded… That very winter in a number of Moscow entertainment centers Relax FM hold an action – few girls-students made their first steps in public «sand presentations»…

At the same time in classic native animation a theme of sand as a material of work exists for a long time. And I‘ll tell you, ours are better than others on head! Saying “ours” I mean Russians, Ukrainians, Belarusans and other masters, as the school of animation and the traditions whatever one may say are Soviet…
And it is not important for Art at all.

So, from “live performances”: vMain of course are in Moscow:

«SAND PROJECT»

«SAND SHOW»

«THE SAND THEATRE OF SERGEY NAZAROV»

«POLARIS»

and one-two modest offers more.
There are precedent in Samara, Tatarstan, St Pete.. Kharkov picks up…

What pleases? The presence of such people, groups, unities in Russia…
Just the fact of their existence populates the theme as phenomenon. Heartily thanks to everyone.
What doesn’t please? The basic principle of the majority :”All what you want for your money”… I have nothing against money, and more over against those who pay. I earn the same way. But doing a work (after all, hundreds of people will see it!) only to justify the fee – it’s a way into a dead end.

“SAND PROJECT”, “SAND SHOW” and “POLARIS” are rather similar projects, the basic participants are girls-students under the direction of experienced girls-managers. Fundamentally commercial projects with the opportunity to rotate the performers. Don’t bring up names and masters; don’t lift arms on “eternal”, directing themselves towards concrete orders. Clear logical position… Valeria Hmara stands out against other performers, she is more adult and not a dilettante in animation, it’s clear from her works.

“THE SAND THEATRE OF SERGEY NAZAROV”
It’s not so easy. But if started… The title is pompous and arises expectations… After I got to know about this project, “ Oh! At last!” – I looked forward seeing the first works. Sand cried out to the theatre and a familiar producer has already suggested me to stage something joint… And here is one, who “ Oh! At last!”…
No comments, but after acquaintance with Sergey’s works it turned out that I know modern theatre bad.
Never the less – nowadays it’s the only sand theatre in Russia. Has a full right on success, its audience and respect.

Another upsets… Some of represented by Sergey themes, boons and images I have already seen in other performers’ works.

The theme of cribbing elements and whole compositions from each other is actual on the whole. Not only beginners sin it, but some respected famous masters as well. The genre as itself is not developed yet but crisis of ideas storms. It turns out: make a table, draw with fingers on the sand – is not big deal. But to create a theme, plot, transformations – talent and serious job is needed.
And so you have to….

Irina Bykova-Goldovskaya

I don’t know why here… Irina’s creative work is not exactly in the format of our theme. But I can’t say a few words about compatriot, creating with sand with such an exhibiting and member activity. Irina draws pictures with sand. On plywood, with different colored sand with the help of special glue. As it’s said: Works firm, safe, eternal.
With all this (it’s really cool) she is a member of five absolutely respectable artistic unions and conjunctions and a participant of more than 70(!) exhibitions for the last 8 years. Take off the hat.

And

ANIMATION

as a dessert.

OUR ANIMATION!

And as you remember it’s the Best all over the world.
Russia, Ukraine, Byelorussia – nowhere the technique of bulk animation is specially tought. But watch the works! – they are works of real Artists (whatever it is - a graduation work or regular master’s experience)

And I’m not surprised at all that in hands of native animation masters sand breathes differently, lives and creates together with the artist…
Sand feels good in these hands.
That’s the secret…

Elena Petkevich in 1985 worked as animator in Vladimir Petkevich’s film “Skazochka pro koziavochky” (real world masterpiece of sand art!), next year maked own sand picture “Lafertovskaya Makovnitsa” (the main prize in France!) In 1997 “Forest’s tales” (again success, again prizes).. In the last – “Old piano’s tales” 2006, not without sand again. And what do you want? School! Hitrouk and Norshtain’s workshop!
http://multiki.arjlover.net/multiki/
By the way, wellknown Ferenc Cako respects Norshtain a lot…
Vladimir Petkevich, already mentioned, having done “ Skazochka pro koziavochky” probably could do nothing more…

Natalia Antipova being a student of institute of cinematography, together with Veronika Fedorova in 2003 shot a film “ Lulaki”, with (cooks will appreciate!) species as material. And defends the diploma by work “Spitfire man” with the same technique.

Maria Stepanova. An author of a number of cartoons, advertisements, tele station breaks… (in common coffee as material). Taught animation in “Real Time” and dear Institute of cinematography… We should mark out “Tracery” (2000) and “Vasana” (2006) among her works…

And of course Evgeny Iakovlevich Sivokon – tutor, present director of Ukranimafilm. Practically all today’s ukrainian animation was made by his pupils. New film “Snow covers land” – a very touching film, and a choice of material here is that very case of real relations and co-authorship of sand and artist. (By the way – the prize for “best animation” in the most prestigious festival of short metre in Clermon-Ferran and many other prizes and awards)
no reference, sorry

And here what seems to be the MAIN, no matter if it’s animation or live performance:

Today artist has incredible multitude of materials in his hands.

SAND ART is art of sand. And answering “Why sand in particular?” a good artist uses not words but his works.

For him sand is not an exotics or fashion tendency. Sand has unique qualities and master helps sand to show up his nature. And sand returning his affection helps to express the ideas and feelings of artist…

Otherwise it makes no sense. Draw attention to it!
